Asthma: Key Messages

  • Uptake of home telehealth varies significantly and may decline over time.

 

  • Home telehealth appears to be as effective as usual care in improving lung function and reducing symptoms.

 

  • There is strong evidence that home telehealth can improve medication adherence, an important component of self-management.  However, there is insufficient evidence of effects on self-efficacy and disease knowledge.

 

  • In the short term (<1 year), home telehealth does not appear to reduce use of primary, secondary, or tertiary care.  Long-term effects have not been studied.

 

  • There is currently no evidence that home telehealth is more cost-effective than usual care.
